Lugano train station is a major railway station of Lugano situated at the hillside to the western part of the city centre. The History

Gothard Railway’s Station was developed and has been opened for public use on 1874 as a segment towards to Chiasso line. In 1882, a line crossing Monte Ceneri Pass towards to Bellinzona. Lugano Railway Station was then connected to the areas across the Canton of Ticino throughout the northern part of Switzerland. In 1886, Lugano Citta-Stazione funicular was opened and trailed by the Lugano-Tesserete railway (FLP) in the year 1912. Several railway stations have been opened, but in later time, those railway stations were being closed. Lugano FLP station took big developments between 1990 and 1992. Finally in 1998, the railway station’s facilities were improved as well as its surrounding areas by a good architect, Aurelio Galfetti. The stations underpass was also restored in 2007.

The Facilities

Travelers with lots of baggage may just rent a car to reach the train station. In front of the station is a huge forecourt from which buses and taxis are strictly prohibited for traffic purposes. Buses are allowed only at the end of the forecourt with its respective lines.
