Car Hire Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth also referred to as the ‘Windy City’ is amongst the largest cities around South Africa. It is set 770 km east of the Cape Town, the capital city. It is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, which connects the city with the inland towns of Despatch and Uitenhage.

The coastal strip of the Bay comprises of an expansive stretch of beaches, protected areas for swimming and other water activities. Although Port Elizabeth is known for its amazing seaside life, that does not in any way mean that it lacks in other things. There are cultural and historical icons to check out for, museums, art galleries, terraced cottages and parks among others.

As you can see, a day or two will not be enough to discover Port Elizabeth and its environs. However, if you rent a car from the nearest airport, you can visit more places and do more as compared to waiting to catch a bus each time you want to go out.

Must-do things

  • Tour the Blue Flag beaches - It would interest you to know that South Africa takes pride in its 27 beaches and seven of these are located in the Windy City. They are labeled “Blue Flag”, owing to their cleanliness. Hence, you can lie on the beach all day, swim in the waters, scuba dive without fearing to catch an infection. Make sure you visit Humewood beach that is near the city. With a rental car from accredited car hire firms around, you can bring your family along for a fun day on the glistening sands.
  • Spend a day at Addo elephant park - Africa is rich in wildlife and your vacation will not be complete without a tour in the wilderness. Addo National Park is relegated to these enormous animals. The journey will take you an hour or so, if you use the main gate. Then, head straight to the heart of the park where there is a water hole around which the elephants shelter. It is amazing to just watch them as they eat, drink and socialize. As you pack for the day do not forget to carry a camera to capture the moments.
  • Drive or walk along the Donkin Heritage Trail - This will be a walk of history. The good thing with renting a car is that you can drive slowly and in some instances stop to grasp some moments. This trail is just five kilometers with beautiful flowers on its side and 47 historical sites along the route.
  • Tour the Red Location Museum - You must visit this historical sight while in Port Elizabeth. The main lobby of the museum will certainly amaze you. It is also known as the House of Columns and it is dedicated to local heroes of the freedom struggle.

Port Elizabeth is a beautiful place to be with so many attractions, but it is best if you rent a car to explore the area.
